Georg Christian Oeder, M.D. and botanist, was brought to Denmark by J.H.E. Bernstorff on the
recommendation of the German naturalist Albrecht von Haller.
He was the director of the second botanical garden and from 1761 to 1771 collected plants for the
first 10 volumes with 600 plates for Flora Danica.
This site tells his story using Ernst Willumsen's manuscript “Georg Christian Oeder. A life – with
more than one effort”.
Gerhard Anton von Halem's “Andenken an Oeder”, translated into Danish by Ernst Willumsen.
Charlotte Hedevig Ericius' letters to her brother, excerpted from the journal “NEUE ERWEITERUNGEN
DER ERKENNTNISS UND DES VERGNÜGENS”. Collection 6, Volume III.
LETTERS FROM NORWAY BY A TRAVELING LADY.
As well as Oeder's letters to Thomas Bugge, transcribed from Fraktur thanks to my parents-in-law,
Lenore and Klaus Schürenberg and the volunteer Sütterlinerstube at the Hospital Heiligen Geist in
Hamburg.
I have created a family tree that starts with Nicolai Gottfried Oeder as the first member of our
family, but I hope someone has proof that G.C. Oeder also belongs.
Many have contacted me to have their family added, so if you have time, please write to me.
So even if we may not share G.C. Oeder, we are all great-great-...-grandchildren of Nicolai
Gottfried Oeder.
